Masters of the Air Tour

Alpventures Masters of the Air Tour is our latest deep-dive into the Bomber War over Europe combined with fascinating Battle of Britain sites.

Apple TV's Masters of the Air is based on the 2007 book of the same name by best-selling author, Donald L. Miller. The 9-part series follows the actions of the 100th Bombardment Group, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber unit in the Eighth Air Force in the East of England during World War II. The show serves as a companion to Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010), and is created by the same executive producers, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman.

Alpventures Masters of the Air Tour to England is the perfect travel experience companion to this incredible show - and we invite you to see the actual locations while you hear the true stories of these Heroes of the Sky, America's Bomber Boys during World War II. But we don't just start with the Combined Bomber Offensive beginning in 1943 - there were plenty of heroic pilots and stories of courage, determination, and bravery in the skies over Europe before "the Yanks" arrived - so we include many poignant Battle of Britain sites on this fascinating tour as well.

In London we start with the horrible political situation Winston Churchill inherited from Neville Chamberlain in May 1940. We will visit the famous Churchill Bunker - the Cabinet War Rooms - where the Prime Minister planned, coordinated, and conducted the war as German bombs constantly rained down on London. We also include an excursion north of the city to Bletchley Park - Home of the World War II Codebreakers, before spending four nights in Cambridge during which we will visit the many Eighth Air Force sites in East Anglia. We'll also have a stop at the former "Mighty Eighth" headquarters located in High Wycombe.

We will spend two days touring the heavy bomber airfields from 'Masters of the Air', including all three airfields of the 13th Combat Bombardment Wing at Thorpe Abbotts, Horham (Parham), and Framlingham; in addition to seeing the B-24 bomber base where actor Jimmy Stewart was Operations Officer. The tour also includes Cambridge American Cemetery, where many of the Bomber Boys were buried or are memorialized on the Wall of the Missing. Did we mention Duxford? Although best known for its nearly 200 historic aircraft, Duxford has one of the finest collections of aircraft, tanks and military vehicles in the country and a wide range of other impressive exhibitions.

Our Masters of the Air Tour also takes in the impressive Battle of Britain Memorial Museum in Kent, with over 600 artifacts from the battle and we include an overnight in a historic British mansion near Dover. Finally, we finish the Tour back in London, where you can spend more time in the UK before your return flight home, or continue your travels to Europe.
