Britain at War! Tour
Alpventures® Britain at War! Tour covers major historical sights and world-class museums between Cambridge, London and the English Channel.
In London we will begin with a City Tour focusing on the London Blitz of 1940. We will visit the famous Imperial War Museum and Churchill's Cabinet War Rooms, with leisure time to browse the museum shops. We'll spend half a day aboard the HMS Belfast, a World War II Cruiser. Our excursion north of the city will be to Bletchley Park - Home of the WWII Codebreakers - and the IWM aviation museum at Duxford. Although best known for its 180 historic aircraft, Duxford has one of the finest collections of aircraft, tanks, and military vehicles in the country and a wide range of other impressive exhibitions. We'll also spend a day touring the bomber airfields from Apple TV's hit-show about the Eighth Air Force, "Masters of the Air."
The last few days of Alpventures Britain at War! Tour take you to General Eisenhower's Supreme Headquarters for the D-Day operation at Southwick House near Portsmouth, Bovington, the White Cliffs of Dover and Kent; before returning to London to fly home. We will take in the Dover Castle and see the newly opened command bunkers underground, and we will visit the Battle of Britain Museum in Kent. Unlike other Tours, we don't leave out the Tank Museum in Bovington; we include a stop to see one of the world's largest and finest collection of tanks from unique WWI tanks to the latest British Army battle tank. The museum has a collection of over 300 vehicles from over 26 countries. Finally, we finish the Tour back in London, where you can spend more time before your return flight home, or continue your travels in the United Kingdom.

APRIL 17: LONDON: Churchill War Rooms
Meet your Tour Guide at our designated meeting point in London, and we start off with a City Tour of London's World War II sites, monuments and memorials. Lunch. This afternoon we continue our City Tour of London's most significant historical landmarks and highlights, with a visit to Winston Churchill's Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum. Before we head to our hotel, we'll see the Battle of Britain Memorial and RAF Monuments along the Victoria Embankment. Hotel check-in and welcome dinner. Overnight London. (D)
APRIL 18: LONDON: Imperial War Museum
Breakfast. Full day at leisure in the fantastic Imperial War Museum. Among many important military weapons and vehicles in the museum, the varied collection is considered to be one of the best military history exhibitions in the world. Return to our hotel and dinner on your own tonight. Overnight London. (B)
APRIL 19: BLETCHLEY: Home of the Codebreakers
Today after breakfast and hotel check out, our quest takes us north to Bletchley Park near Milton Keynes. Lunch. Afternoon Guided Tour through Bletchley Park to discover the top-secret world of the World War II codebreaking in the preserved huts and blocks. Transfer to our hotel for check-in. Overnight Cambridge. (B, D)
APRIL 20: NORWICH: Heavy Bomber Airfields
Breakfast. Morning visit to nearby East Anglia, where the countryside was dotted with dozens of RAF and American bomber airfields for the Mighty Eighth Air Force. Our first stop will be the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum at Thorpe Abbotts. This was the home of the "Bloody Hundredth" - the notorious 100th Bomb Group that sustained so many casualties throughout the war - and who are depicted in Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's new miniseries on Apple TV, "Masters of the Air". Lunch. Continue to Horham Airfield, another 13th Bombardment Wing base for the 95th Bombardment Group. We will have one more stop before transferring back to our hotel for the evening. Dinner. APRIL 21: DUXFORD: Historic Airfield / Museum
Breakfast, hotel check-out, and visit the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial this morning. Our next stop is the amazing Duxford branch of the Imperial War Museum. Lunch. Afternoon visit to the historic RAF Duxford airfield museum. Transfer back to our hotel and dinner on your own. Overnight Cambridge. (B)
APRIL 22: LONDON: RAF Museum / HMS Belfast
Breakfast. Check out of our hotel and continue back down to London. Morning visit to the impressive RAF Museum in Hendon. Lunch. Continue into the city for a visit aboard the World War II Cruiser used on D-Day, HMS Belfast (self-guided tour). This afternoon we continue to our hotel for check-in. Overnight London. (B)
APRIL 23: DOVER: Secret Wartime Tunnels
Breakfast. Check out and morning transfer south to Kent County to visit to Dover Castle, including a Guided Tour of the Command Bunker (underneath the historic castle), and visit the local museum. The evacuation of Dunkirk (Operation Dynamo) was planned and conducted from the Command Bunker. Lunch. Afternoon free time to explore more of Dover Castle. Overnight Dover. (B, D)
APRIL 24: DOVER: Kent Battle of Britain Museum
Breakfast at leisure this morning. Transfer to the impressive Kent Battle of Britain Memorial Museum at (former) RAF Hawkinge. Located on the site of the former RAF Hawkinge, the closest fighter base to the English Channel and one of the most frequently attacked airfields in Britain, the BOB Memorial Museum has over 600 artifacts from the Battle of Britain - each one with its own personal story. Lunch. Afternoon stop at the Battle of Britain Memorial in Capel-le-Ferne. Return to our hotel near Canterbury. Overnight Dover. (B)
APRIL 25: PORTSMOUTH: Ike's D-Day Headquarters
Breakfast and hotel check out this morning. Transfer today to Portsmouth, and enjoy lunch in the famous Golden Lion Pub at Southwick - the "unofficial mess" of General Eisenhower's D-Day Headquarters near the Southwick House. Private Tour of Eisenhower's former D-Day headquarters (SHAEF) at the Southwick House. Afternoon visit to the new and improved D-Day Story Museum in Portsmouth. After Breakfast, we begin with a journey to Bovington on the southwest coast. Here we will visit the famous Tank Museum, with the world's largest and finest collection of tanks from unique WWI tanks to the latest British Army battle tank. Enjoy most of the day at the museum's special event: TIGER DAY. Late afternoon return to our hotel and dinner on your own tonight. Overnight Portsmouth. (B)
APRIL 27: LONDON: Historic Dockyard / Battle of Britain Bunker
Breakfast. Morning free time for optional sightseeing at the Portsmouth Historic Harbor; home to Admiral Nelson's HMS Victory and the fascinating Royal Navy Museum. Check out of our hotel and transfer back to London. Lunch. Afternoon Guided Tour of the Battle of Britain Bunker at RAF Uxbridge. What to Know:
This Tour begins and ends at London Heathrow (LHR) Airport. Tour rate does not include roundtrip airfare. You can plan to arrive in London a few days early, and you can also add time to the end of your Tour. We strongly recommend arriving in London on or before April 16, 2025. The Tour begins at our London Hotel in the morning on April 17th; and getting into the city from London Heathrow Airport in the morning can take up to 2.5 hours.
The Fine Print
Reservation Policy:
A completed and signed Tour Reservation Form and a refundable $400 deposit (per person) are required to book our Tours. To book online: scroll to the top of this page and click the "Book Tour" button. You can adjust the quantity of people on our secure payment pages with PayPal. Payments are made to: ALPVENTURES. Payment in full is due 90 days prior to departure, and must be paid in USD by check / credit card.
Cancellation Policy:
Although Tour cancellations are not anticipated, Alpventures® reserves the right to cancel Tours for any reason, prior to Tour departure date, in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on Alpventures® part. In the case of Tour Participant cancellation, a full refund will be granted up to 30 days prior to Tour departure. A cancellation fee of 20% of the Tour price will be charged for cancelling between 30 and 20 days prior to departure date and 40% between 20 and 10 days prior to departure. No refunds honored within 10 days of the Tour departure date.
